ICE stated Roberts is an illegal alien from Guyana with a deportation order since May 2024 and is an active ICE fugitive. The arrest occurred after Roberts reportedly fled in his car upon being identified by ICE agents, later abandoning the vehicle and being apprehended in a brushy area with the assistance of an Iowa State Police K9. A senior ICE official told Fox News that Roberts, who first entered the U.S. in 1999 on a student visa, was ordered removed in absentia on May 22, 2024, and an Immigration Judge denied a motion to reopen his case on April 24, 2025. Agents found a loaded gun, a hunting knife, and $3,000 cash in Roberts' vehicle. He also has a weapons arrest from 2020, though its disposition is unclear.
