A baby boy from Iowa, born at 21 weeks and zero days gestation, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the most premature baby ever. Born on April 27, 2020, at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the infant, named Curtis Means, weighed just 1 pound 10 ounces (0.49 kg) at birth. Doctors gave him only a 4% chance of survival. Curtis Means's survival is attributed to the extensive care he received, including mechanical ventilation and the administration of a surfactant to help his lungs develop. He was discharged from the hospital 275 days after his birth, on January 19, 2021. Guinness World Records confirmed his status as the most premature baby ever, a record previously held by another child born at 21 weeks and one day.
