A senior Iranian lawmaker, Ebrahim Rezaei, stated on Saturday that Iran is considering withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and increasing uranium enrichment to 90% if international pressure escalates, according to SNNTV. This warning follows European ministers' declaration that Iran must return to negotiations by the end of August to avoid full United Nations sanctions. Rezaei, spokesman for the parliament’s national security and foreign policy commission, asserted that current sanctions, imposed after the U.S. withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), are already “maximum and comprehensive,” rendering further UN snapback sanctions ineffective. He added, “Official snapback would not change our situation in any way.” His remarks came one day after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that any new nuclear talks would necessitate “a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial deal.” The possibility of leaving the NPT and enriching uranium to 90% is “on the table,” Rezaei confirmed.
