Israel conducted a strike targeting Abu Obeida, the Hamas military wing spokesman, in Gaza City earlier today, according to Israeli media and defense officials. The results of the operation, which targeted a building near the Thai restaurant junction in the Rimal neighborhood, remain unclear, though Israeli officials expressed optimism about the potential elimination of Abu Obeida, identified as Khihi Hathafi. The operation was reportedly managed by the Shin Bet and involved significant intelligence gathering. Reports from Gaza indicate at least eight fatalities and a large number of wounded resulting from the strike on the building. Hamas's internal security mechanisms have warned of "distribution of rumors" regarding the elimination of Abu Obeida. Sources state that if the elimination is successful, it would be highly significant, as Abu Obeida has become a symbol of Gaza and a Palestinian icon. He is also one of the last remaining officials from Hamas's original military leadership on October 7. The strike occurred less than 24 hours after Abu Obeida released a statement threatening the IDF and hostages. During the operation, numerous steps were taken to reduce civilian casualties, including the use of accurate weapons and air observations, according to a joint notice from the IDF spokesman and Shin Bet. The notice also stated that terrorist organizations in Gaza systematically violate international law by using civilian institutions and populations as human shields. Separately, the Houthi terrorist organization announced the elimination of "Prime Minister" Ahmed al-Rahawi and several other senior terrorists. In other military news, the IDF is reportedly bolstering armored forces and will establish a new tank brigade to prepare for future conflicts.
