Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani met with U.S. Treasury and State Department officials in Washington D.C. this morning, September 18th, 2025, to discuss reintegrating Syria's economy and combating terrorism financing. This visit occurs as the United States, Jordan, and Syria formally submitted the Suwayda Roadmap to the UN Security Council earlier today, aiming to address the crisis in Syria's Suwayda province. The Suwayda Roadmap, which received support from Middle Eastern nations excluding Israel, as well as European countries, is described as a comprehensive vision for a sustainable and unifying solution, according to the U.S. Mission to Turkey. Senator Marco Rubio stated that reconciliation begins with healing and a path toward equal rights for all Syrians. Meanwhile, Representative Joe Wilson hosted Al-Shaibani in Congress, calling it a historic opportunity and urging Congress to repeal the Caesar Act. Minister Al-Shaibani's visit marks the first by a Syrian foreign minister to the U.S. in 25 years. His discussions with U.S. officials, including the Treasury and State Departments, focused on reconnecting Syria's economy to the global financial system. The submission of the Suwayda Roadmap to the UN Security Council is intended to be taken as an official document ahead of the UN General Assembly next week. The roadmap's goals include advancing accountability, reconciliation, justice for victims of atrocities, and minority rights in Syria.
