NATO has doubled the number of Eurofighter jets providing airspace control over Poland following multiple Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace overnight, according to a statement from the Bundeswehr. The Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) confirmed that "numerous drones entered Polish airspace overnight and were met with Polish and NATO air defences." SHAPE is in contact with Polish leadership, and NATO is consulting closely with Poland. This escalation of NATO's commitment to its eastern flank follows reports that at least five Russian one-way attack drones, believed to have targeted a NATO military base in Rzeszów, Poland, entered Polish airspace on Wednesday. Two of those drones were intercepted by Dutch F-35A Lightning IIs, while three others crashed under unexplained circumstances, according to preliminary findings shared by the Polish Armed Forces. The spokesman for the President of Poland, Leshkevich, stated that for the first time in NATO's history, a drone was shot down over the Alliance, signaling a willingness to defend NATO's eastern flank. In response to these events, Ukraine has reported destroying a bridge used by Russian military for logistics in the Novaya Tavolzhanka area, Belgorod region. Separately, Ukraine announced within the last 14 minutes of the reporting window that it will train Polish forces on counter-drone warfare within Ukraine, an initiative that follows recent drone incursions into Polish airspace. These developments occur amidst broader security measures, with Latvia announcing the closure of its airspace along its borders with Russia and Belarus from 6 p.m. on September 11th until at least September 18th, as a precautionary measure. In unrelated news, the European Union's General Court annulled the European Commission's approval for Hungary's Rosatom-built Paks II nuclear power plant project on September 11, 2025, citing a failure to justify bypassing EU procurement rules. Sweden has also delivered its 20th military aid package to Ukraine, valued at $836 million, which included 18 Archer howitzers.
